The descendants of the Native American tribe of the Kashaya, living to this day at the settlement of Fort Ross in California, paid a visit to the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre with their exhibition programme on the 23rd and 24th June. They sang, danced, played musical instruments and spoke about their culture.
The Russian settlement of Fort Ross was founded in 1812 in Northern California. For over a decade, Russians and the native Kashaya (literally “Masters of Game”) lived side by side in peace, enriching each other’s culture. The descendants of these Kashaya still live at Fort Ross. What were their ancestors like? How have those living in the same land become in our time?
The Kashaya are grateful to Russians for helping them preserve their traditional culture. The Kashaya are people of the land, people of nature, sincere and genuine. Meeting with them touches something deep down in the soul. We are very happy to have made their acquaintance.
