Titled Yulya, the upcoming exhibition  is dedicated to the creative output of artist Yulia Kosulnikova.

Titled Yulya, the upcoming exhibition at the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center is dedicated to the creative output of artist Yulia Kosulnikova. The show includes more than 50 of her works.

Despite never having studied painting, she became famous thanks to her innate talent and recognizable artistic method, which can be compared with Dostoevsky’s «psychological realism» as both seek to comprehend the human soul by accurately and thoughtfully depicting the world. Hidden behind detailed descriptions of reality, of Yulia’s usual microcosm is a macrocosm of relationships and experiences. The exhibition does not aim to highlight how cognitive impairment is reflected in the artist’s works but focuses on the rise of creative power that transcends all boundaries and restrictions.

Ingenuousness is the key feature of the artist’s works; they are free from self-analysis, which is so common and all but obligatory in contemporary art, but there is timeless existentialism in them, where self-expression amounts to self-realization. Not unlike a chronicler, Kosulnikova depicts objects around her without classifying them as more important and less so. She is interested in everything she sees: wards, corridors, hospital chairs, TV pictures, doctors, nurses and their patients. Yulia discovers plots and events in familiar things and scenes as she fills impersonal public spaces with life and her personal experiences.

Kosulnikova has developed a unique style: she draws spaces, sometimes from unusual angles, with the poses and gestures of the people she portrays lending dynamism to her pictures. The palette of her works is based on local shapes of color, which often do not coincide with the form; as a result, the fictional world and the figures in it enter into a relationship that is expressed through various combinations of colors.

The second part of the exhibition features a video by Yuri Kozyrev, one of the world’s best-known war correspondents. Kozyrev has the ability to relate to a critical situation as he captures people’s feelings and emotions rather than events. Compositionally, the exhibition is an effective juxtaposition of two elements: displayed next to the works of Kosulnikova, who has been a little-known artist until recently and who feels impelled to create and is full of empathy for the reality that has been so harsh on her, is a video by Kozyrev, a remarkable master of documentary photography, who has deliberately chosen to limit his range of expressive means that reveal the artist behind the work.
