.4/14/2025-8/3/2025
Exhibition
The exhibition explores the connection between dance and visual art in the 20th century — from their parallel evolutions to the shared foundations of these art forms.
Location: Temporary Exhibition Space
Age: 0+
Rhythm and the ability to transcend temporal conventions and create a reality that challenges the ordinary — these are some of the key mysteries of both visual art and dance. The exhibition is made up of ten rooms, each focusing on different periods in the evolution of this spatial-temporal art form — from Isadora Duncan’s free dance to the practices of leading contemporary choreographers.
The exhibition opens with a section celebrating the life and career of Isadora Duncan, an American-born dancer who revolutionized classical choreography. Archival materials are presented here alongside works of art that resonate with her creative spirit. On display in the following rooms are the choreographic experiments of the 1920s and 1930s, including ballet designs by Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich, as well as costume designs by Léon Bakst, Alexandre Benois, and others. The exhibition also looks at the relationship between painting and dance.
The exhibition is presented in partnership with the Bolshoi Theatre and has been organized in collaboration with leading Russian museums, including the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the State Hermitage Museum, the Bakhrushin State Theatre Museum, the Mayakovsky Museum, the State Museum of Fine Arts of Tatarstan, the Radishchev Art Museum in Saratov, and many more.
