The Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center present the New Israeli Sound Festival. This project is dedicated to the contemporary culture and people of Israel — it is about music, food, clothing, philosophy, and lifestyle. The festival will showcase Four Tel Aviv collectives with their distinctive musical styles ranging from garage rock to trip hop to electro pop. Persian-Jewish singer Liraz will be the headliner of this year’s edition of the Festival. The Festival is sponsored by Roman Abramovitch.
The New Israeli Sound will spread over the whole open-air territory of the Jewish Museum. The main stage where all the performances will take place, as well as the fan zone and tribunes will line along the historical facade of the Bakhmetevsky Garage — the main theatrical set of the project. The market and the DJ zone will be situated on the veranda at the museum entrance; the lounge area and the food court will be set up at the left alley of the yard.
The New Israeli Sound is the only festival of contemporary Israeli music and culture in Russia. The first edition of the Festival took place at the Jewish Museum in 2019 hosting Quarter to Africa, Jane Bordeaux, Garden City Movement and other collectives famous not only in Israel but also In Europe and USA. The Festival became a springboard for the major musical program at the Museum: before the COVID-19 pandemics the team managed to bring to Moscow the electronic percussion trio Shame On Us and the glam rock band The White Screen, as well as presenting young Russian bands to the audience after the closing of the borders.
By presenting the Festival we offer a unique experience — we aim at recreating the atmosphere of the Tel Aviv streets and the way of thinking of its inhabitants, of the people nurtured by European traditions, Mediterranean slow living, fashion parties, and the city's innovative working environment. Through the Festival we will learn what these people eat and drink, what kind of brands they choose, what is their attitude towards culture and what is their philosophy.
Musical Program
Liraz
Liraz is an Israeli-Persian singer and actress. Her music combines electro pop and Persian tradition — her music is inspired by the songs of the Iranian singers of the 1970-s.
Her first album Naz record, entirely in farsi, became an underground hit in Iran. After the release, local musicians contacted Liraz via social media offering collaboration. Difficult relationship between Iran and Israel as well as the moral austerity of the islamic republic made this collaboration virtually dangerous. The result is her second album 'Zan' (woman in Farsi) is Persian music for and about women.
Liraz herself calls the release ‘her private revolution’ and ‘ music which makes people not only dance and smile but also think’. Zan tracklist will be the highlight of the singer’s performance at the New Israeli Sound.
Buttering Trio
Using heavy beats, fat bass lines and sweet yet poignant lyrics, this trip hop band brings “some peace in a troubled region” and “the funk to the desert”. Their debut album Toast was mentioned not only by criticas, but by their fellow musicians — Snoop Dogg, American rapper, producer, and actor, called it “very cool”.
Buttering Trio present their live shows as a non-stop experience, one psychedelic groovy journey through the mixture of their subconscious minds. They preach no compromises with their audience. Buttering Trio sings of tenderness, love, and authenticity engaging the audience into their mood. The trio's combination of loop-based beats with live instruments (saxophone, vocals, synths and bass) creates a natural and refreshing flow between atmospheric sounds, jazz explorations, and broken rhythms. Among big festivals in their career — Fusion Festival, Garbicz Festival, Strawberry Festival & many more.
Tatran
An eclectic Tel-Aviv based instrumental band, with musical influences that range from jazz, avant-garde, post-rock and experimental. Drummer Dan Mayo founded Tatran together with bass player Offir Benjaminov and guitar player Tamuz Dekel to research various musical styles. Multiple efforts brought success — the release of the groovy Shvat album led to international appraisal and performances at the European, American, and Canadian festivals. Unique approach to contemporary rock won the respect of the colleagues — Dan Mayo was named a phenomenal talented drummer and was invited to record a solo album of the Linkin Park’s guitar player Mike Shinoda.
Hila Ruach
Hila Ruach is a songwriter, vocalist, bass player and producer, she took the best from the British punk and art pop rock and in large part defined the face of the feminine Israeli rock scene. In her texts she's defying and reflecting upon the values of the millennial generation — efficiency, consumer culture, and self-control.
Hila Ruach’s work is based on contradictions: she sways easily from grange to cinematic surf rock in Hebrew, and in her concert she appears both aggressive and fragile, taking it after the French alternative women singers.
