The Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center with support of VTB Bank and SAFMAR Charitable Foundation represents the exhibition: Time Effect: the Influence of the Russian Avant-Garde on Modern Fashion.
The exhibition investigates a long history of interaction between the Russian and Western cultures comparing the heritage of the Russian Avant-garde and leading fashion houses.
Visual parallels between the works of the classics of the beginning of the 20th century and modern ready-to-wear dress do not only reveal the influence of the radical artistic movement on the mass culture but also help to trace the newest history in fashion with typical of this sphere adoption of cultural patterns of different epochs.
Ever since the Renaissance fashion has been using a complicated system of tags and metaphors which allowed to literally read dresses endued with a meaning of a text. However starting from the 20th century fashion strived more after pure visualization, and figurative arts were more often thought of as the main source of inspiration. Starting from the 1960s designers became carried away with graphic simplicity of the works of the Avant-garde artists adopting, first of all, typical of the artists clear geometric and abstract shapes, two-dimensional designs and absence of single point perspective. One can say the influence of figurative arts on fashion has peaked – plenty of works of modern couturiers remind three-dimensional canvases, sculptures, more imbued with the values of an artifact.
Over the course of history figurative arts served as one of the instruments of studying the dress history. The heritage of painting, graphic art and photography later gives us the idea about the evolution of ceremonial, military, working and other dresses of different epochs. The exhibition: Time Effect, on the contrary, looks at the history of art through the works of the leading fashion houses which use Russian Avant-garde artists’ color and composition patterns and often borrow recognizable shapes, decoration details and ornaments.
The exhibition will unite more than 100 exhibit items – ready-to-wear dresses of famous designers and paintings, graphic works, porcelain and other works of the most important artists of the Russian Avant-garde from the Museum and private collections.
