On September 22, 2014, the exhibition called «Prayer books of the Schneerson collection» was opened to the public. Prayer books were heavily used by the Jews on holidays as well as on everyday basis, thus just few of them survived. The Schneerson collection features about 60 prayer books. The oldest prayer book in the collection dates from 1600 and was printed in Venice. 9 prayer books – 3 makhzorim (festival prayer books) and 6 siddurim (everyday prayer books) on the exhibition span over 300 years of Hebrew printing, from early 1600s–early 1900s.
The centerpiece of the exhibition and the gem of the collection as a whole is the first edition of the Alter Rebbe’s Siddur published in Shklov (today’s' Belarus), in 1803–1804. This siddur was compiled by Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Lyady. This edition is extremely rare and was even considered extinct for a long time. The Schneerson collection may be the only repository holding a copy of this unique prayer book.
